• Product: Oman Abrasives produces a blasting abrasive made from mineral slag (iron silicate), commercially known as copper slag grit.
• Manufacturing Process: The product is a by-product of the copper smelting process, where the molten slag is quenched in cold water, forming hard, angular granules ideal for abrasive blasting.
• Trade Name: The company’s copper slag grit is branded as OMGRIT®.
• Grades and Sizing: OMGRIT® is available in six different grades, ranging from Turbo + to HD+, with varying particle sizes to achieve different cleanliness levels (Sa 2, Sa 2.5, Sa 3) and anchor profiles (40–120 microns).
• Standards and Approvals: The product conforms to ISO Standard 11126-3 for Copper Refinery Slag Abrasives and SSPC – AB 1. It is approved by major industry players including shipyards, oil and gas companies, and coating contractors.
• Applications: It is primarily used for surface preparation, such as removing contaminants, rust, and old paint from steel surfaces in industries like shipbuilding, steel fabrication, oil and gas, and construction.
• Properties: The grit is known for its hardness (6-7 Mohs), low free silica content (<1.0%), low dust formation, and high cutting speed, making it an effective and economical alternative to traditional sandblasting media.
